2. Origin (Etymology)​

Where did this word come from? It is actually a deeply softened command!

The Sanskrit/Hindi Root: It comes directly from the ancient verb root ज्ञा (Jna), which means "to know" or "to understand". This is the exact same root that gave us the modern Hindi word जानना (Jaanna - to know).

3. The Command to "Suppose"​

If you want to tell someone to "assume" or "suppose" something, you give the command: जानो (Jaano - Know this / Suppose this).

The Phonetic Shift​

Over centuries, as Awadhi became softer and faster-spoken by the common people, the long 'o' (ओ) was clipped into a very short 'u' (उ).

जानो (Jaano) -> जनु (Janu)

4. Examples from the Manas​

Here is an example where Tulsi uses this word in the Manas:
