Suffix lyuṭ (अन)

1. The lyuṭ (अन) Suffix Rule

In Pāṇini's grammar, the suffix ल्युट् (lyuṭ) produces the active suffix अन (ana). It is attached to a verbal root (धातु) to create a noun.

The resulting noun can carry three distinct meanings, depending on context:

  1. The action itself — "the act of ___ing"
  2. The instrument — "the thing used to ___"
  3. The location — "the place where ___ happens"

The third meaning — the Location Maker — is the one at work in कानन.

2. The Location Maker in Action

When the lyuṭ suffix functions as a location maker, it works exactly like certain Latin and English suffixes:

Latin/English PatternLogicExample
observe + -atory"the place of observing"Observatory
hear + -orium"the place of hearing"Auditorium
कन् + अन"the place of shining"कानन

The short root vowel a in कन् lengthens to ā as a standard vowel-strengthening (Vṛddhi) effect of this suffix class:

कन् (kan) + अन (ana) -> कानन (kānana)

3. Comparison with Hindi

Hindi has inherited many lyuṭ-formed nouns directly as Tatsama words, without speakers needing to consciously analyse the suffix. You use them every day:

WordRootMeaning
भवन (Bhavan)√भू (bhū) — to be / to exist"The place of being" — a building, a hall
आसन (Āsan)√आस् (ās) — to sit"The place/act of sitting" — a seat, a posture
वन्दन (Vandan)√वन्द् (vand) — to praise"The act of praising" — salutation
कानन (Kānan)√कन् (kan) — to shine"The place of shining" — a luminous forest

4. Examples from the Manas

  • कानन: From the root कन् (to shine) + अन (the location maker). "The place of shining" — a luminous, living forest.
