Suffix ira (इर)

1. The ira (इर / इरच्) Suffix Rule

In classical Sanskrit grammar, specifically within the Uṇādi Sūtras and Taddhita affixes, the suffix इर (ira - often technically referenced as irac or iran depending on the paradigm) is added to certain verbal roots (धातु - Dhatu).

2. Morphological Function

When this suffix is appended to a verb expressing a state of being or an action, it generates an adjective. It acts as an active descriptor meaning "one who possesses the quality of the root" or "that which causes the action of the root."

3. Comparison with Hindi

In modern standard Hindi, adjectives formed with the ancient Sanskrit "ira" suffix have simply been adopted as direct vocabulary (Tatsama words) without users needing to manually add or dissect the suffix. Words like रुचिर (Pleasing/Beautiful) or मदिरा (Intoxicating) are perfectly intact historical formations that continue to function beautifully as poetic adjectives today.

4. Examples from the Manas

  • रुचिर: From the root रुच् (ruch - to shine or appeal) + इर (ira). Meaning "that which is pleasing or radiant."
